Fine-Art Papers

The following are of some of the most popular fine-art papers that we select from (or the prospective customers can select from when configuring a custom order) to print our images. Often asked information for each fine-art paper is shown within an image. This information is compiled from our observations, various internet resources, and manufacturers’ data.

We have merged an image of fine-art paper with its relevant data. It includes: Our paper designation #, Manufacturer fine-art paper name, physical characteristics (weight, thickness, reflectivity, composition, and texture), chemical constituents (acidity, lignin content, and OBAs), and the shade of white. Each image represents ~ 1.1 square inch area of our fine-art paper sample.

The white shade of paper is measured by manufacturers (its whiteness data shown here) under specific conditions that may not represent end-user display environment at any one time. Additionally, OBAs and other factors may under/overestimate perceived paper whiteness outside of lab. Moreover, the relative whiteness among papers presented here is complicated by the amount of gray introduced to show texture. That is, our overall image whiteness should only be used qualitatively. The significance of brighter paper (whiteness data presented here) is that it can promote better perception of contrast, gamut, and saturation of printed image.

The fine-art paper texture we show here was photographed with light directed at very low angle with respect to paper. In contrast,  under more ordinary display conditions lighting is often omni-directional such that our customer may not (is unlikely to) notice any texture (except if texture is coarse), especially if the print is protected with glass or acrylic. We photographed a small area of paper sample (~ 1.1 square inch) to show more detail for papers with fine texture. As a consequence, larger scale texture variations are not visible, however, they usually appear unnoticeable, especially in colorful areas of the photograph (except for monotone areas such as the sky).

When we select a fine-art paper we heavily rely on our test prints for each paper (and other data, in part shown within images below) knowing that (from experience) some images are better suited for printing to a smaller group of fine-art papers or a specific fine-art paper to achieve a desired look (approved by the photographer). Our recommended fine-art paper choice(s) for a specific image (or related images) is(are) listed within merchandise description found via the “Shop” page and/or “drop-down” merchandise-selection menu.

Over time we will add more fine-art paper choices.
